Accounting systems are playing a major role in helping businesses--performing daily operational processes in an efficient manner and providing users with the information on time, any time. Predicting the future of the accounting industry is a tough game--one fraught with half-truths and misses. The general assumption is that massive changes are near, when in reality, change is slow. Extensions of existing trends, deeper penetration into current technology, and small changes to large systems are in store for the vertical in 2016 owing to the conjoined groups that are driving all this accountants and software developers. The clear winner amongst the trends seems to be cloud-based accounting for every party involved. Storing data in a place where everyone can access it from makes sense. Mobile payments, invoicing, estimates, and time management can all feed into an accounting ecosystem, making it even more important to store data in an accessible place. Accountants already love the cloud. It keeps them closer to their clients' finances and allows them to provide timely insight without having to muddle through paperwork. From a vendor standpoint, cloud-based accounting just makes business sense with compatibility issues being reduced, users being up-to-date on their upgrades, and increased revenue through the subscription revenue system.Going forward, accounting software packages are also likely to include functionality to support the supply chain, manufacturing, HR, marketing and sales, and other functional business areas. This essentially would mean less need to support complicated inter-module integrations, which can greatly help to reduce support costs. 2016 promises to be a great year for accounting software. This is a healthy space and there is a lot of room for growth and success.
